The Bald Eagle:Success story
• Just few decades ago, the United States stood in danger of losing of it’s national bird . In 1963 only 417 breeding pairs of bald eagles were known to inhabit the lower 48 states. Hunting and the use of pesticide DDT were both to blame .
• DDT exposure caused the eagles to lay eggs with shells so thin the unborn did not survive .
• DDT was banned in 1972.The bald Eagle was placed on endangered species list I. Almost all states in 1978. Today there are almost 10,000 or more nesting pairs in lower 48 state . And in June 2007,US government removed the species from the threatened list.
